A National Police officer has been sentenced to three months in prison and fined a total of €6,100 for causing the eyeball of a detainee in Marbella to pop out after slapping him because he wouldn’t sit down.
The detainee was apparently nervous when taken to the police station in Marbella and when he refused to sit down, the officer slapped him, smashing his glasses and causing the dislocation of his eyeball.
The detainee was operation on under general anaesthetic and spent thirteen days in hospital. His sight in one eye is now impaired.
The officer was sentenced to three months in prison for causing the injury and fined €4,100 to cover the medical costs of the detainee and €2,000 in compensation.
The Andalucia Human Rights Organisation APDHA criticised the undue delay in this case, noting that it was quite normal for cases brought against the security forces to be the subject of long delays.
The incident occurred in Marbella six years ago. The APDHA also criticised the leniency of the sentence.
