Archaeologists at the Peñalosa site near Baños de la Encina in Jaén province have found a unique sword dating back 4,000 years which has rivets and a silver hilt and is unlike any other Bronze Age artifacts found in the area.
The sword, 64 centimetres in length, belonged to a senior lord or chief. However, unlike most similar discoveries, this item was not found inside a funerary but was located under the collapsed roof of one of the village houses.
The archaeological site dates back to between 1850 and 1450 BC and is one of the most important sites in the Alto Guadalquivir area.
Excavations began back in the 1980’s.
