The opposition PSOE has criticised the Nerja government regarding the status of the project to create a vocational training centre in the Barriada de los Poetas area of the town, saying that it is just one more example of the lack of commitment, economic waste, idleness and violation of electoral promises by the PP mayor, José Alberto Armijo.
The spokesman for the PSOE, and mayoral candidate in 2011, Ángel Ramírez, himself under heavy fire recently in his role as manager of the Nerja Caves Foundation, says that the project has been at a standstill for the past three years.
Ramirez says that the government excuse is that they did not receive funding from the Junta de Andalucia when it was requested. However, Ramirez contends that the construction of the vocational training centre was a PP electoral promise and that it was to be built entirely with municipal funds.
Furthermore, Ramirez contends that in July, Mayor Armijo announced that the project was to be adapted and that the building, when finished, would become a Casa de Musica to allow for cultural events and provide a location for the Municipal Band to practice.
Ángel Ramírez is requesting that, whether it be a Casa de Musica or a Vocational Training Centre, the project needs to be revived and completed and will be raising the matter at the next plenary session of the Council.
As the elections get closer, of course, one can expect much more political rhetoric on all sides.
