Around 200 protesters blocked the N-340 in Torrox yesterday, cutting the traffic flow for a total of 45 minutes as they demanded action to end the constant erosion of the beaches in Torrox Costa.
The protest took place at the Conejito roundabout near to the bus station and temporarily cut all traffic through the town.
Many of the protesters were local businessmen, fed up with the constant erosion of the beaches which has an adverse affect on their establishments as well as on the town in general.
Each time there is a storm, fresh sand is brought in by the Department of Coasts, but the people of Torrox want a permanent solution to the problem. Promises of action during the past fifteen or twenty years have still not yet materialised.
Further similar protests are currently being planned.
The latest solution offered by the Department of Coasts requires moving the promenade back about ten metres which neither the Council nor the local businesses will accept. It would mean the removal of countless businesses from the promenade area.
