In March 2010, the floppy disk was officially retired and now Sony has decided to finally halt the manufacture and distribution of another obsolete piece of technology.
Tthe cassette Walkman, the first low-cost, portable music player, is retiring, the final batch having been shipped to Japanese retailers in April. Once they are gone, that’s it, no new cassette Walkmans will be available through the manufacturer.
The first generation Walkman was released on July 1st, 1979 in Japan. It eventually became a huge success, with over 200 million variations of the cassette Walkman sold over the product line’s 30-year career.
