If you happen to be strolling up Mount Everest and feel the need to make a call, check your email or tweet about the Yeti you’ve just seen, it is now possible.
Nepali mobile network operator Ncell has installed the first 3G base station at the base camp of Mount Everest, meaning that visitors, climbers and people living in the Khumbu Valley will be able to make calls and wirelessly connect to the Internet.
Just waiting for the first Foursquare check-in.
Until now, visitors to Mount Everest have had to rely on satellite phones to make calls, but now they can do so through a standard GSM, 3G-enabled network. Coverage apparently reaches right up to the peak of the Everest.
