Goat herders have been carrying out protests at the premises of the two major milk companies in Andalucia, Forlactaria in Antequera and García Baquero in Jaén, accusing them of monopolising and dominating the market.
Talks between COAG, the agricultural organisation, and the milk companies broke down on Friday, the secretary of COAG, Eduardo López, describing the attitude of Forlactaria and García Baquero as ‘intransigent’.
The problem is not the actual price of the milk, but the fact that the two companies negotiate to dominate the market and that the price received by the farmers is at the same level as it was twenty years ago.
This, the protesters say, is leading the industry to the point of extinction with accumulated losses in the sector put at around €40 million.
