The Málaga Provincial Court has convicted the Mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, José Manuel Aranda (PSOE), of corruption relating to an urban planning violation, disqualifying him from holding public office for a period on nine years and imposing a fine of twelve months at €10 per day.
The ruling overturns the decision of the Criminal Court Number 3 in Málaga which earlier acquitted the mayor.
The prosecution appealed the original case and the Provincial Court considered that it should revoke the previous ruling because the mayor was perfectly aware that his conduct was not consistent with the law when he granted a building permit for a house on undeveloped land.
The case relates to October 2006 when the mayor granted a building permit to an individual and his brothers for land classified as non-urban.
