Goat herders in Antequera have suspended their protests until next Thursday and talks are set to resume between COAG, the agricultural association, and the companies Forlactaria and García Baquero who, between them, control 80% of the goat milk market.
The goat herders have spent the past week protesting outside the gates of the two companies, accusing them of monopolising and controlling the market while the farmers themselves are making losses and are being paid the same price for the milk as was the case twenty years ago.
Andalucia is the largest producer of goat milk with around 700 goat farms, mostly dairy.
There are roughly 1,000,000 animals, 40% of the total in Spain and 10% of the EU census, producing 250 million litres of milk with a value of €120 million.
The median age of goat farmers is 45 years.
