La Almedina underground car park in Torrox Pueblo, built at a cost of €7 million and opened in December 2008, has accumulated losses of over €1 million and both the Council and the concessionaire are exploring solutions to the situation.
Average occupancy of the 496 place car park has been around 50% on weekdays and 30% at weekends, far from ideal. Reduced tariffs have not helped the situation.
Suggestions by the concessionaire to increase tariffs and/or obtain a subsidy to reduce the losses has virtually been ruled out, but other ideas are still being discussed such as extending the period of the concession from twenty years to forty years.
