The bodies of eight elderly former residents of the La Caritat geriatric facility in Olot have been exhumed after an attendant at the home confessed to killing three patients since October 12th.
At the time of their deaths, the cause of death in each case was recorded as ‘natural’.
In October, the death of one of the residents, 85 year old Paquita Gironès, raised suspicions and led to the arrest of one of the attendants at the home, Joan V.
Joan V. then confessed to having killed three people at the home since October 12th, all of whose deaths were recorded as being from natural causes.
Autopsies are now being carried out on the other eight people who have died at La Caritat.
The accused claimed that the killings were out of ‘love’ and an attempt to free them from the poor health which was undermining their quality of life.
