Two climbers suffered serious head injuries yesterday in the mountains near the town of Monachil in Granada province after suffering falls.
In the first incident, a woman, climbing with four other foreigners, lost her grip and fell a distance of about five hundred metres into the río San Juan ravine.
She was rescued by SERIEM (Mountain Rescue) officers and taken to Olla de la Mora before being transferred to hospital by helicopter. Her condition is said to be serious.
The second incident occurred when a climber slipped and fell as he was scaling the Corral del Veleta ice wall in Monachil. He fell about 60 metres and suffered serious head injuries.
The injured climber was taken by helicopter to Granada airport and then transferred to hospital where his condition is described as serious.
