More than half of the promenade at Ferrara Playa in Torrox Costa is now designated as being maritime-terrestrial public domain land since the coastal areas were realigned by the Department of Coasts, a dependency of the Ministry of Environment.
This means, in effect, that the land will eventually revert to the public domain and businesses located in the area will find themselves unable to renew their leases.
The Council, with the backing of the opposition PSOE (they all agree for once), is putting forward arguments to the relevant authorities that the boundary for the maritime-terrestrial public domain should actually be the retaining wall of the promenade.
After all, they argue, the promenade was built with the full permission of the Ministry of Environment.
The Council also rejected a proposal by the Department of Coasts to stabilise the beach area, and thus prevent beach erosion, by physically moving the promenade back by about ten metres. This rejection of the Department of Coasts proposal also had the backing of the opposition PSOE.
Meanwhile, the weekly protests and demands for action on preserving the beaches by businessmen in Torrox continue, despite the threat of fines.
Beach erosion has been a problem in Torrox Costa ever since the completion of the promenade in 1990.
