Torre del Mar has a new community centre, the main purpose being to promote the social inclusion of gypsies into the community.
The new centre, in Cuesta del Visillo, has been given the name ‘Sorí’, which in the gypsy language means ‘happiness’.
According to the Councillor for Social Affairs, Carmen García, the idea is to develop a program to promote intercultural encounters and the development of positive policies for social inclusion of this ethnic group.
All types of workshops and classes are planned, from learning a trade to promoting cultural awareness.
There is internet access, a restaurant and there are also plans to set up a school for parents of the area and to promote healthy habits among children aged between 5 and 12 years through recreational and educational workshops.
The centre has been realised through the efforts of the Department of Social Affairs of the City Council, the Municipal Housing Authority(Emvipsa) and the Association for the Promotion and Research Gypsies in the Axarquia (Apiga).
