A lollipop man who helps youngsters from St Mary’s Primary School in Shenfield, Essex, across a busy road has been banned from stepping off the pavement to help children cross the road because health and safety rules now state that it is too dangerous for him to step onto the road. Now he just presses the button at the pedestrian crossing and waits on the pavement while youngsters cross the road.
1. If it is unsafe for a clearly visible, luminous lollipop man with a big STOP sign to step onto the road, how is then safe for children to cross the road?
2. What a waste of taxpayer money having someone stand there all day to press the occasional button.
