Up to sixteen reservoirs in Andalucia are having to drain off water due to the recent heavy rains in the province and the prospect of more rain to come.
The average level of the reservoirs in Andalucia is 74% of capacity, some 7% over the average in the country as a whole.
Fifteen of the reservoirs draining off water are in the Guadilquivir basin and ten of these are located in Córdoba province.
Draining of reservoirs is quite common during periods of rain as the optimum level, to allow a margin of safety, is 70%. This is particularly true when more rains are expected.
