The investigation into corruption in Alcaucín, Málaga province, known as the ‘Arcos Case’, has led judge Irene Urbón of Court Number 3 in Vélez-Málaga to implicate the Councillor for Town Planning in Torremolinos, María Isabel Llamas, for crimes of influence peddling and carrying out negotiations not permitted for officials.
In February 2009, the former Mayor of Alcaucín, José Manuel Martín Alba, and Councillor José Francisco Mora were both arrested on corruption charges relating to the sale of a 6,500 square metre plot of land in 2004.
The plot of land yielded a €500,000 profit when it was sold.
The name of María Isabel Llamas, who is variously the daughter, sister and sister-in-law to three of the accused in the case, appeared on the sale documents. The documents also show she had a 25% share of the land.
The Councillor denies any connection with the operation and stated that if her name appeared on any documentation it was as a result of something to do with her family, her father in particular. Her father, a real estate developer, corroborated her statement.
