Ronda Council is hoping that a project to build a residential centre for the physically disabled can be realised by 2012.
The location for the new centre is La Isla where a building lies half finished. There have been various proposals for this building over the years such as a new home for the National Police or a library, but none has ever come to fruition.
The new project will cost in the region of €1.2 million, with 50% coming from the coffers of the Junta de Andalucia who, according to Mayor Antonio Marín, have expressed interest in the idea.
That would leave Ronda Council to finance the remaining 50%, something they could do following the sale of the old football field to Eroski for an amount of around €2 million.
The residence would occupy an area of 1,000 square metres and accommodate 25 to 27 people. There would be 18 rooms with private bathrooms (11 single and 7 double rooms) spread over two floors, a reception area, games room, reading room and a large outdoor area including solarium, swimming pool and a space for such things as creating an organic garden.
In principle, the centre would only serve the town of Ronda and not the surrounding area as it is a collaboration between the Council and local associations involved with the physically disabled.
Mayor Antonio Marín announced the plans to coincide with International Disabled Day.
