A centre for music and dance is once again on the agenda and the Council has now approved a blueprint to adapt the part-completed building in the Barriada de los Poetas for this purpose.
The building was started several years ago but was abandoned after the funds ran out and the original project has long since been discarded.
In May 2009, the Mayor began talking about a music and dance centre but nothing ever came of the idea, lack of funding from, in particular, the Junta de Andalucia being cited as the main reason for this furious inactivity.
Now, two more years down the line, things could possibly be starting to move again.
The idea is to adapt the building, which currently has a roof but little else, to become a centre where local bands, such as the Municipal Band and the Drum and Bugle Band, can practice and for it to be the headquarters of the Municipal School for Music and Dance.
The Municipal School for Music and Dance is currently located in the colegio San Miguel which, although it serves the purpose, is deemed not to be the most appropriate location.
The Nerja Municipal Band currently share space with the Local Police and the Drum and Bugle Band have no fixed abode, generally practising in the Parque Verano Azul.
The Municipal School for Music and Dance has over 400 members.
