Vélez-Málaga Council has launched a campaign to prevent drinking and driving which, amongst other things, sees free petrol for people who test negative for alcohol.
The Council has been carrying out a campaign for the past three years called ‘Conductor alternativo’ (Alternative Driver) in which it tries to encourage groups of young people on nights out to designate one in the group as the driver, that person remaining sober.
Every Saturday, from now until January 10th 2011, there will be various alcohol controls carried out by the Local Police between midnight and 03:00 and those who register a ‘zero’ level will be given a certificate of congratulations which can then be redeemed for €10 worth of petrol.
The campaign runs alongside the normal DGT national drink-driving campaign being carried out between December 13th and December 19th 2010.
According to the Local Police Chief, José Andrés Montoya, alcohol has been a factor in one out of every three accidents in Vélez-Málaga during the past five years.
