Farmers in parts of Andalucia are beginning to count the cost of the recent storms which came at a time when the olive and citrus harvests were in full flow.
Flooded farms, felled trees and fruits rotting on the ground are a common sight, especially in Sevilla, Córdoba and Jáen provinces. Initial estimates in these provinces are that 20,000 hectares have been badly affected, although this figure is likely to grow as the situation is assessed more thoroughly.
In many cases, the effects of the floods could be long term. The orange harvest was in full swing and, added to this, the price received by farmers for their fruit was already at rock bottom.
It is not only the crops that have been damaged, however, agricultural facilities have also been badly hit in many cases.
