The flamenco singer Enrique Morente, in a coma in the ICU in Madrid, has been officially brain-dead since Sunday according to his family.
The singer entered hospital on December 4th for an operation on an ulcer and on December 6th underwent further surgery. Complications arising from the second operation resulted in him being transferred to the ICU in Madrid’s La Luz hospital.
Enrique Morente was born in Albaicin, Granada, and would have celebrated his 68th birthday on December 25th 2010.
Morente is regarded as one of the great innovators of flamenco and he has won several awards, including the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
Married to dancer Aurora Carbonell and father of three daughters, including singer Estrella Morente, the singer was currently preparing an album titled “The Barber of Picasso”, a homage to the painter from Málaga.
