A baby, only a few months old, was badly injured on Friday morning in a fire at a house in Plaza de San Juan in Zurgena, Almeria.
The fire started at around 10:30 in the ground floor lounge of the two-storey house in Plaza de San Juan but quickly spread to other rooms. Smoke entirely blackened the upstairs of the house and the whole building was made virtually uninhabitable.
The fire was out by the time the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene.
The fire is believed to have started with an electric heater in the lounge. The grandfather and the baby suffered burns of varying degrees and neighbours transferred the baby by car to the Hospital de La Inmaculada in Huércal-Overa.
From there, due to the severity of the wounds, the baby was transferred to the Hospital Virgen de Las Nieves in Granada.
Social Services are arranging for temporary accommodation for the family as they cannot return to their home until municipal technicians have assessed the structural damage to the building.
