Speed cameras using a new radar system are now in operation at the Torrox tunnel, kilometre 288 of the A-7 highway, although fines will not be issued until February 1st 2011.
The cameras, clearly visible to motorists, log the time the vehicle enters the tunnel and the time it leaves. A computer then calculates the average speed and if this average speed is over 100 kph, a photo is taken of the vehicle and the driver will receive notification of a fine.
The fines are quite steep, as much as €600. In the meantime, offending drivers will receive a notification of infraction with details of what it would cost them in fines and points lost under normal circumstances.
