A train travelling between Santander and Madrid broke down on Sunday morning due to frozen power lines leaving 148 passengers stranded, with no heating, in temperatures of minus 13 degrees.
The train came to a grinding halt just after 08:00 at km 430,700 between Lantueno and Reinosa.
The area where the train stopped, the Comarca de Campoo, is on orange alert for very cold temperatures.
The passengers will either be transferred to their destination by other means of transport or a local train will try and tow the stricken machine.
