The Nerja Green Party has once again denounced what it considers the illegal dumping of waste in the old quarry in the Rio de la Miel area as an ‘environmental attack’.
The old quarry is in the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park and is used to dump all sorts of waste materials.
According to the Greens, there is no control, no recycling and no measures taken to prevent harmful materials or chemicals from entering the water system.
Following a similar denuncia in August 2010, the Nerja Councillor for Environment, José Miguel Jimena, reportedly stated that everything was legal, properly controlled, the area was guarded and constant monitoring was taking place.
The Greens reported that, on their recent visit on Sunday, there was indeed a guard station but there was no-one there.
The Greens also stated that they had approached the director of the park, Ricardo Salas, who apparently knew nothing of the landfill site and even asked whether it was in the park.
