After more than 18 months delay, the first part of a project to preserve and improve the Roman ruins near the lighthouse in Torrox is about to get under way.
The project is being financed by the Ministry of Tourism of the Junta de Andalucia and the Torrox Council under the Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Axarquia.
This first part, basically cleaning up the area and making it ready for the next phase, will cost €154,000 and will be carried out by the company Antonio Bravo.
The total cost of the project, which will eventually see an interpretation centre in the old lightkeeper’s house, is budgeted at €624,000.
The Roman ruins near the lighthouse are regarded as some of the most important in Málaga province but have been overlooked and have fallen into disrepair in the past few years.
Local residents and businesses have often complained about the state of the area.
