National Police and Revenue officers have arrested two people and seized nearly two tons of hashish off the coast of Almeria.
Operation ‘Mare Nostrum’, as it was known, began when the police in Lloret de Mar (Gerona) discovered that a gang were preparing to ship drugs from Morocco to Holland with a stopover in Spain.
The alleged gang members were located on Ibiza where the boat to be used for the smuggling operation was moored in the San Antonio marina.
The boat was then tracked and, about 50 miles off the coast, it was intercepted. Officers found 1,978 kilos of hashish hidden on the boat. The crew, one Dutch and one Belgian national, were arrested.
