Four years after the submission of the draft proposal, work on the 30,000 square metre botanical gardens next to the Nerja Caves could be about to start.
The Misister of Environment of the Junta de Andalucia, José Juan Díaz Trillo, has presented details of the project to the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, and the manager of the Nerja Caves Foundation, Ángel Ramírez.
The site. already a BIC (Site of Cultural Interest), will also become a BIN (Site of Natural Interest).
The work will be carried out by the public company Tragsa and the completion period is 36 months. The project is costing €2,748,609 and is being financed by the Junta de Andalucia.
The plans include more than 5,000 plants, a reception and information area, a classroom/workshop, a network of 1,600 metres of pathways and an eleven metre footbridge. The area will be completely accessible for those with mobility problems.
