Fishing boats in Barbate will now remain in port for at least two months as the obligatory halt to fishing for anchovy off the coast of Morocco, part of the fishing agreement between Spain and Morocco, comes into effect.
However, the agreement between Spain and Morocco, signed in 2007, comes to an end on February 27th 2011 and the fishermen are hoping that it will be renewed. The fishermen also want to renegotiate their terms and conditions under the agreement.
There are 17 vessels from Barbate dedicated to anchovy fishing, with some 400 fishermen and other ancillary workers involved.
