Torrox Council is planning to set in motion a project for the construction of a mortuary in the municipality, something many residents have been demanding for many years.
The idea is to allocate municipal land in the Torrox Park area, roughly equidistant between Torrox Costa and Torrox Pueblo, for this purpose.
The plan is for a building of about 2,500 square metres with three rooms. As the building would be in a residential area, adding a crematorium has been deemed to be ‘out of the question’.
At the moment, the paying of respects to the dearly departed has to be done at home, which many oppose, or by travelling to neighbouring Nerja or Vélez-Málaga. There are two cemeteries in Torrox, one in El Morche and one in the Pueblo, but no mortuary.
The Council is hoping to agree plans to put the alloted land out to tender to attract companies willing to build the mortuary in exchange for ownership of the land. There is no municipal land available for this purpose near either of the two current cemeteries and Torrox Park is therefore seen as an ideal location.
