Last year, in the area near the mouth of the rio Torrox close to the lighthouse, there were about fifty people living or sleeping rough. This figure has since grown to around 200 and the local residents have had enough.
A group of residents wrote to the Council to complain about the accumulation of organic waste in the area, known as El Sillón, drunks or people out of their gourds on mind-bending chemicals urinating in doorways and a general sense of insecurity as a result of the illegal encampment.
The Council apparently stated that it has no direct responsibility for the area as it is protected maritime-terrestrial land and falls under the control of the Department of Coasts.
The residents have now written to the Department of Coasts asking them to take urgent and immediate steps to resolve the situation and preserve the area.
