The municipality of Sayalonga now has a workshop dedicated to the cultivation, processing and marketing of the ‘nispero’ (loquat or fruit of the medlar), an initiative financed by the Ministry of Employment of the Junta de Andalucia.
A group of twenty unemployed people in Sayalonga will begin a one year course. There are two modules, one dedicated to jams and marmalades, liqueurs and cooking, and another to experimentation with new cultivation methods and tree and plant treatments.
At the same time, Sayalonga is trying to achieve the designation of origin ‘Nísperos de Sayalonga’, something which will the marketing of the fruit and, it is hoped, turn Sayalonga into the largest producer of nisperos in Andalucia.
The Dia del Nispero takes place on the first Sunday in May.
