The search for a British hiker missing in the Sierra Nevada mountains following an avalanche has been suspended until tomorrow due to lack of light. His two companions managed to reach safety, suffering only slight injuries.
The avalanche occurred at around 13:30 in the area known as the Barranco de San Juan on the slope of Virgen de las Nieves, about a kilometre from Hoya de la Mora. The area is outside resort and the recommended skiing/walking area.
Around one hundred people were involved in the search on Sunday afternoon, including Mountain Rescue, SEPRONA and military personnel.
The missing man is a 42 year old British national who lives in Zafarraya.
Cetursa, the operators of the ski resort, have been warning people of the risk of avalanches due to recent heavy snowfalls, advising neither skiing nor hiking outside the designated areas.
