Energy saving is one of the fashionable topics at the moment, and the small town of Colmenar has just invested €1,000,000 to become the first municipality in the Málaga province, and one of the first in Spain, to have a 100% efficient public lighting system.
The new network of public lighting is based upon the criteria of energy saving, efficiency, automatic reduction of luminous flux at every point of light and pollution reduction. Carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 205 tons per year.
The system cost one million euros and was financed by various regional and provincial ministries under a number of plans, such as the ICO.
The new system was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Colmenar, Pedro Fernández (PSOE), the government sub-delegate in Málaga, Hilario López Luna, the provincial delegate for Innovación, Pilar Serrano, and numerous other deputies.
The initial investment in the new system is expected to be amortised in five years.
