A fire on Sunday at Albolote prison in Granada, which required the evacuation of 130 inmates from their cells to the patio, may have been caused deliberately according to the authorities.
The fire started at around 19:30 in a storage room and burned a number of mattresses which, although fire retardant, caused a lot of smoke.
Around thirty people were affected by the smoke, although only one, a prison officer, required hospital treatment.
The prison director, Jaime Hernández, praised the good behaviour of the inmates during the incident as well as the conduct of the prison staff.
