The Mayor of Barbate and his government team have locked themselves in the Town Hall after financial and other institutions refused to extend them any more credit to pay their debts or their workforce.
The municipality of Barbate has debts of €30 million just for Social Security and has to pay this back within ten years. In the meantime they need to pay the workforce of over 300 people each month and no-one will lend them any money.
Mayor Rafael Quirós is willing to cede his post to anyone who has a solution to the problem. Meanwhile, he is hoping that the financial institutions will change their minds.
