According to the government spokesman, José Miguel García, some of the auditors who oversee the municipal finances are studying the possibility of legal action against the PSOE relating to a motion proposed by the PSOE deputy spokesman Luis Peña.
Luis Peña has apparently proposed a motion calling for independent auditors to look into investments relating to the sale of land for the proposed golf course. The Council sold the land in 2004 for the construction of a golf course, although the company who bought the land is demanding the return of the money (€15 million) as the project was subsequently vetoed.
The motion also apparently questions the work of the municipal auditors.
José Miguel García says that the PSOE should know that a private audit of municipal finances is illegal, various checks and controls being prescribed under the law. The municipal accounts, once approved by the Town Council, are then subject to controls by the regional government (Cámara de Cuentas) and also by the Ministry of Finance (Tribunal de Cuestas).
Garcia also pointed out that the auditors are not politicians but are fully qualified professionals. He puts this motion down to the fact that the municipal elections are fast approaching.
