Three sub-Saharan immigrants died on Saturday after fire destroyed their shanty hut in Melilla.
The immigrants were amongst dozens who sleep in tents or other makeshift accommodation in order to avoid being held in the Temporary Detention Centre for Immigrants (CETI).
The three men, who had arrived illegally in Melilla, were initially held in the CETI pending repatriation but later decided to leave voluntarily. They set up camp, along with dozens of others, in an area known as Cerro de Palma Santa.
The fire occurred at 05:00 on Saturday morning, destroying their shelter which was made of plastic. It is thought that the fire was caused by candles being used for lighting in the shelter.
