The avalanche of last minute inaugurations is now over as the pre-election rules come into force as from today, Tuesday.
Between now and May 6th, a number of rules (fortunately) come into effect relating to the regional and municipal elections to be held on May 22nd.
As from today, and until May 12th, it is now possible to request a postal vote.
Also as from today, and until May 6th, all party political banners and advertisements must be removed. They can be put up again on May 6th. However, there are a number of exceptions to the ‘no advertising’ rule.
The ‘no advertising’ doesn’t stop the parties from using the media to ‘make known’ their manifesto or ‘present’ their candidates. Also falling outside the ban on ‘advertising’ are emails, sms text messages, web pages, social networks, leaflets and pamphlets.
So really, it’s just the billboards that have to come down for a few weeks.
