Torrox Council has initiated archaeological work in the vicinity of the existing Roman ruins near the lighthouse after a local resident uncovered lintels and fragments of columns pertinent to a first century Roman temple.
The Roman ruins in Torrox Costa are considered to be some of the most important in Andalucia and the Council is still intending (and has been for a long time) to build an interpretative centre at the site.
The archaeological site near the lighthouse contains well-preserved Roman baths, a necropolis and furnaces for the production of ‘garum’, a sort of fish paste popular at that time.
