The leader of the IU in Nerja, Manuel Valero, has denounced the decision by the owners of Los Huertos de Carabeo to start charging for parking on the plot which is also home to the Nerja Feria.
Valero says that the area is included in the PGOU (General Plan) as an area of open spaces and the new proposal would be inconsistent with this principle.
Under the new, but as yet unapproved, PGOU, the area is allocated to housing, possibly a new Town Hall and various other projects.
According to the Council, the owners of Los Huertos de Carabeo have the necessary licenses for such a project and, currently, the land is privately owned.
The Los Huertos de Carabeo currently provides free parking for about 1,000 vehicles, one of the last ‘free’ parking areas remaining in town after several landowners were ordered to put walls around empty plots being used , with the full consent of the owners, for parking.
Larna says:
It seems that only non residents will be charged. Residents just have to show ID cards for free parking.
Apparently foreigners who are resident for up to 6 months per annum next to the entrance to the carpark will be charged, which will be very expensive as most are pensioners.
