The Guardia Civil is investigating whether the death of a woman in a fire in Alicante on Tuesday is a case of domestic violence.
A fire was reported in a penthouse apartment in calle Pau, Mutxamel, at around 15:00 on Tuesday. In the apartment, firemen found the charred body of a 29 year old woman. Her partner was found unconscious on a bed and suffering from smoke inhalation.
After being treated at the scene by paramedics, the man asked not to be transferred to hospital. However, his request was ignored and he is now in the San Juan hospital.
The couple have two children, aged one year and five years, who were not in the house at the time of the fire.
Initial indications are that the fire was started intentionally, although the police are unwilling to officially classify the incident as a case of domestic violence until the investigation is completed.
However, the Mayor of Mutxamel, Asunción Llorens, has called an urgent Council meeting for Wednesday to condemn this ‘act of domestic violence’, the meeting to be followed by a protest gathering outside the Town Hall.
