A fire at a landfill full of toxic waste and dangerous materials in Nerva caused a thick black plume of smoke and burned for an hour before the blaze was extinguished.
The landfill site, managed by the company Befesa, has been the scene of five fires since the facility opened in the late 1990’s.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, the cause of which is not yet known, with a mixture of water and earth. The environmental group Ecologists in Action have requested the precautionary closure of this and other Befesa facilities, citing poor management and flaws in the plants as their main reasons.
