Council defends legality of Los Huertos de Carabeo car park

The Councillor for Car Parks, Antonio Navas, has defended the legality of the new paid car park in Los Huertos de Carabeo, saying that the owner of the land has all the necessary legal documentation and favourable reports from the municipal technicians.

The Councillor said that the Council had two options, either accept a private paid car park in the town or close it down. As the facility complies with the law, the Council opted to let it open.

Navas also added that lorries and coaches can park free and, until a deal is reached on a suitable subscription price for local residents, all locals can park for free.

The Councillor stressed that the Council will continue its policy of making car parking space available for both residents and visitors, quoting the 400 spaces now available near the proposed new Health Centre and the 250 spaces in El Chaparil which will be available shortly, as prime examples.

One might wonder why this ‘policy’ is only now manifesting itself when, for the past few years, free parking areas have been closed down on a regular basis.

  1. ‘All locals can park free’. What about foreign residents of up to 6 months a year who are owners of property, and also pay Spanish taxes ?

Do they also park free? If so, how?

I suspect that they will have to pay the tourist rate which is prohibitive.

‘The facility complies with the law’. So the law is not bothered about the lack of security at these expensive car parks? (Several cars recently parked in the Los Huertos de Carabeo car park have recently had their fuel hoses cut, and their tanks emptied, causing distress to owners as well as the cost of repairs and refuelling, and of course, the car parking charges.)

  2. I obtained my volante, from the Ayuntamiento, to enable me to get parking for 7 euros per month. I don’t need a car all the time so hire one when necessary. I went to the car park office and was told I was not entitled to the 7 euros deal as I had to own a car and pay the rates to Nerja Town Hall. I have owned an apartment in Nerja, next to the car park. since 1986 so remember it when the land was tilled by oxen. I consder I have paid enough taxes, to the Town Hall, in that time to warrant the car park concession. But then again!
