The Catalan writer Ana Maria Matute will today, Wednesday, receive the Premio Cervantes 2010, one of the highest awards in Spanish literature. King Juan Carlos I will make the presentation.
Ana Maria Matute was born in Barcelona on July 26th 1925 and wrote her first novel, ‘Pequeño teatro’, at the age of seventeen. It could not be published until 1954, the year in which she won the Premio Planeta.
In 1996, Matute wrote what is considered to be her major work, ‘Olvidado Rey Gudú’. She has won many literary prices throughout her life, including the Premio Nacional de Literatura Miguel de Cervantes in 1959 for ‘Los hijos muertos’, the Premio Nadal in 1959 for ‘Primera memoria’ and the Premio de la Crítica de Narrativa for ‘Los hijos muertos’.
