According to the Minister for Equality and Social Welfare, Micaela Navarro, there are 4,000 prostitutes in Andalucia and 300,000 in the country as a whole, 90% of whom are immigrants whose status in the country is irregular.
The Minister was attending a conference on trafficking for sexual exploitation organised by the Bar Council of Sevilla. Objectives of the conference included raising awareness in society about trafficking for sexual exploitation and combating it using the maximum resources available under the law.
Aspects such as legal assistance and social resources for victims of sexual exploitation were also discussed.
The Minister insisted that, when combating prostitution, much of the guilt for the problem lies with those who contract the services of prostitutes.
