Thousands of people spent the night on the streets in Murcia following two earthquakes which have left 8 people dead, including two pregnant women and a 14 year old girl, and 167 people injured, three of them seriously.
Around five hundred people, most of them immigrants, spent most of the night queuing for food, drink and blankets provided by the Red Cross and other organisations.
According to the authorities the situation is under control and inspections are being carried out on buildings in a number of areas.
The first earthquake was in northern Almeria and was felt as far as Almeria city. The second quake, which was more intense, was felt in Jaén, Granada, Málaga, Sevilla, Alicante and Madrid.
In Velez Rubio, the nearest town to Lorca and some 43 kilometres away, the tremor caused cracks to appear in several buildings but there were no injuries. A school was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
In Granada, the most seismically active region in Spain, the tremors were particularly noticeable in the Camino de Ronda and the Canine Unit of the Fire Brigade was put on alert to rescue potential victims.
