The Mayor of Alcaucín, Guillermo Pérez (PA), died last night at the age of 48 years, a victim of lung cancer.
Despite his two month battle with the disease, Pérez had opted to stand for re-election as Mayor, a position he had held since 2009 when the former mayor, José Manuel Martín, was arrested for corruption.
The funeral is expected to take place in Alcaucín on Tuesday evening. The PA in the Axarquia has suspended political campaigning today and two days of official mourning have been declared. Flags are flying at half mast.
