Last week in the paraje Puerto del Viento near Ronda, a couple of speleologists found skeletal remains in a pothole. At first they thought the remains were of an animal, but further scrutiny showed them to be human and they contacted the police.
The cavers accompanied the police to the site and showed them the remains, located in a pit about three metres deep.
An initial inspection led to the discovery of a shell casing near the remains, suggesting the person had met a violent end. It is thought that the body has been in the pit for at least ten years and police are now checking reports of missing persons during the past twenty years.
Forensic tests are now being carried out on the remains and it is hoped that dental records will help identify the body.
